Mesothelioma Explained: Where is Asbestos Found?

May 21, 2012

There is not one specific area or place where asbestos is found. Because it was used in the production of so many construction and consumer products for most of the 20th century, any building or product made during that time could potentially contain inhalable asbestos fibers. While some buildings built before 1980 used more asbestos products in their construction than ones that are built today, there is still no guarantee that a new building doesn’t contain some type of asbestos product.

Some professions that require the regular handling of asbestos products do carry a higher risk of asbestos exposure. Some of these professions include construction workers, miners, and auto mechanics. Military veterans and ship builders traditionally have the highest risk of asbestos exposure, and have accounted for up to 33 percent of all mesothelioma cases, according to some studies.
