At your first treatment session, you will meet your radiation therapist, who will explain how radiation therapy works and answer any questions you have. To start treatment, you will be asked to lie down on a table beneath the radiation machine. A special shield may be used to protect other parts of your body from the radiation. You will be advised to lie as still as possible until treatment is over.
At this point, the therapist will go into another room to administer treatment and monitor you. You may notice lights aimed at you – these show the therapist where to focus the radiation beams. As the radiation machine is activated, you will hear a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner, combined with clicking sounds. These sounds indicate that your treatment is in progress.
