How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

How Does Radiation Therapy Work?

If your doctor has prescribed external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for your mesothelioma, you may be wondering, “How does radiation therapy work?” Knowing what to expect from the procedure can be helpful in easing your fears. This page explains what happens during a typical radiation treatment.

How Does Radiation Therapy Work: What to Expect During the Procedure

At your first treatment session, you will meet your radiation therapist, who will explain how radiation therapy works and answer any questions you have. The therapist may use a pen to make small marks on your skin, which will indicate where the radiation beams will be pointed to help fight your cancer.

To start treatment, you will be asked to lie down on a table beneath the radiation machine. A special shield may be used to protect other parts of your body from the radiation. You will be advised to lie as still as possible until treatment is over.

At this point, the therapist will go into another room to administer treatment and monitor you. You may notice lights aimed at you – these show the therapist where to focus the radiation beams. As the radiation machine is activated, you will hear a noise similar to a vacuum cleaner, combined with clicking sounds. These sounds indicate that your treatment is in progress.

You will be able to communicate with your radiation therapist during treatment through an intercom system in the room. He or she may ask you periodically how you are doing. You should also feel free to let your therapist know if you are feeling scared or uncomfortable during treatment.

How Does Radiation Therapy Work: Does It Hurt?

External radiation therapy can be compared to getting a simple x-ray – it’s quick and painless, lasting just a few minutes. You’ll likely get your therapy at a walk-in clinic, which can be closer and more convenient than going to a hospital. When you go for radiation treatment, be sure to wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing jewelry near the treatment area.
