Ochsner Cancer Institute is a New Orleans-based cancer care center that’s part of the broader Ochsner Health System. This medical system is the largest of its kind in the Gulf South area that provides multidisciplinary cancer care. Ochsner is also at the forefront of developing new, more effective approaches to cancer treatment – in fact, it offers more clinical trial opportunities than anywhere else in the Gulf South region. Mesothelioma patients can count on a high level of expertise and understanding when they seek out treatment at Ochsner.
About Ochsner Cancer Institute
The Institute has its roots in a multi-specialty New Orleans group practice founded by Alton Ochsner and four of his colleagues (collectively known as the five founding fathers) in 1942. Since then, it developed into the Ochsner Clinic and then Ochsner Foundation Hospital, setting a new and unprecedented standard for cancer care in the region.
Finally, it flourished into what is today a premier private, non-profit healthcare system with 29 affiliated hospitals and more than 60 community health centers. Ochsner is truly a positive force for medical innovation in Louisiana. The Institute is widely acknowledged for its excellence in conducting research, its innovation in treatment, and its patient-focused approach to cancer care.

Mesothelioma patients at Ochsner Cancer Institute may notice what is perhaps the most outstanding characteristic of the care here—the level of collaboration. Care and treatment at Ochsner are truly multidisciplinary, as the experts recognize that patients benefit most significantly from a well-rounded care team.
The physicians at Ochsner practice a variety of specialties, allowing patients to receive more focused attention—there can be up to 20 cancer specialists overseeing the care for each patient. “When you come through our doors you receive cancer care services unlike any other in a comfortable atmosphere.” — Ochsner Cancer Institute
Ochsner’s medical experts employ a patient-first philosophy. It’s a practice that can be seen in more than just the Institute’s mission statement—it’s implemented in every patient’s case. Patient safety and concerns are the number one priority. All patients are treated respectfully and with an understanding of their needs.
Decisions are never made without the inclusion of patients and their families. In addition, transparency is paramount—clear communication is practiced at all times, so there is never any confusion or frustration. Ochsner’s medical teams know that dealing with mesothelioma is enough of a strain and aim to make your care as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Mesothelioma Doctors at Ochsner Cancer Institute
At Ochsner Cancer Institute, mesothelioma doctors can provide patients with disease-specific expertise—something that is truly invaluable when it comes to diagnosing and treating mesothelioma. Ultimately, personalized treatment improves patient quality of life.
Mesothelioma’s relative rarity means that even highly informed general oncologists may not understand the disease and its optimal treatments. There have been cases where patients received inaccurate prognosis information that could have been avoided had they seen an oncologist more familiar with mesothelioma.
“Ochsner’s multidisciplinary approach means you have a whole network to lean on – and each member of the team knows what the other is thinking and doing. Ours is an environment that fosters innovation and collaboration. Everyone is on the same page – everyone has the same information and the same goals.” — Ochsner Cancer Institute
At Ochsner, physicians who have had extensive experience diagnosing and treating mesothelioma can rely on precedent and case-by-case patient assessments to ensure that you receive the high-quality advice and care that the Institute is known for.
The following doctors at Ochsner oversee treatment for mesothelioma:
Dr. Robert Ramirez
Dr. Robert Ramirez received his medical qualifications from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of the New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. He specializes primarily in lung cancers, both for research and clinical purposes. These cancers include small cell and non-small cell lung cancers, as well as mesothelioma. Because mesothelioma can often resemble certain non-small cell lung cancers, having a detailed understanding of the complexities of these cancers allows for more precise diagnosis and applicable treatment.
Dr. Brian L. Pettiford
Dr. Pettiford received his education at the prestigious institutions of Morehouse College and the University of Pittsburgh. He specializes in lung cancers and both malignant and benign lung diseases. He focuses on minimally invasive treatment options and management methods for these diseases. Dr. Pettiford heads the pleural mesothelioma program at Ochsner, performing extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) and pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) procedures for mesothelioma patients, helping them pave the way to better management of this aggressive type of cancer.
A History of Mesothelioma Expertise
Ochsner has also greatly benefited from the legacies of former medical professionals at the Institute, such as Dr. Rodney Landreneau M.D., a respected thoracic surgeon who previously served as the Director of the Ochsner Cancer Institute and the Vice-Chairman of the Department of Surgery for Cancer Services at Ochsner.
Dr. Landreneau was the first cancer specialist in Louisiana to use hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC) in combination with cytoreduction—or “debulking”—surgery to treat mesothelioma. Cytoreduction with HIPEC involves removing mesothelioma tumors from the abdomen followed by the application of heated chemotherapeutic drugs to kill remaining cancer cells. This effective form of multimodal treatment has been an indispensable offering in Louisiana, where the rate of mesothelioma occurrence soars above the U.S. average.
