Van Elslander Cancer Center Patient Experience

The physicians, surgeons and other staff members at the Van Elslander Cancer Center aim to treat every patient as though he or she was a member of their own family. They do this from a multidisciplinary standpoint.

A multidisciplinary approach means that when a patient is receiving care at the Van Elslander Cancer Center, they are accessing the knowledge and experience of a wide variety of care providers, such as:

  • Registered nurses
  • Rehabilitation specialists
  • Dietitians
  • Chaplains
  • Social workers

And, unlike some other cancer centers, Van Elslander offers all of these services in a single building. Regardless of whether a patient is coming in for laboratory testing, chemotherapy or surgery, they can rest assured they don’t constantly have to locate a new building.

On top of their excellent cancer care, Van Elslander Cancer Center places a high degree of importance on the mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of their patients.

This is why patients at Van Elslander can help relieve some of their stress, anxiety and fear with access to:

  • Massage therapists
  • Reflexologists
  • Medical hypnotherapists
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi instructors

In addition to these classes and sessions, patients at Van Elslander are invited to spend some time in the calming Healing Gardens or Valade Healing Center, where they can spend time walking through a labyrinth, meditating in a chapel or taking in some art in the gallery.

Finally, the Van Elslander Cancer Center believes it’s important for patients and their families to be informed about their prognosis and treatment options. That’s why they have a Cancer Resource Center, or library, on-site as well. Here patients can spend some time relaxing, reading and learning about what to expect and what questions they should ask their medical team.

Mesothelioma Program at Van Elslander Cancer Center

By using a multidisciplinary approach to treating mesothelioma, Van Elslander Cancer Center is better able to provide patients with the best possible care. Their medical teams include specialists in radiology, massage therapy, chemotherapy, surgery and more.

Each treatment plan is tailored towards the unique needs and circumstances of every patient they see.

One of the specializations of the doctors at Van Elslander is treating peritoneal mesothelioma. This type of mesothelioma is the second most common type after pleural mesothelioma. In peritoneal mesothelioma, the tumor is in the peritoneum, or the tissue-covering organs in the abdominal cavity.

One of the main issues surgeons face when they are trying to treat this form of cancer is that peritoneal mesothelioma does not grow in one large tumor—it’s a bunch of smaller tumors. These small tumors are more difficult for surgeons to see and remove. However, Van Elslander Cancer Center is equipped to deal with these difficulties.

Mesothelioma Treatment Options at Van Elslander Cancer Center

While Van Elslander Cancer Center treats all forms of mesothelioma, they specialize in treating peritoneal mesothelioma by using a team of oncologists and specialists who have dedicated their career to treating the rare disease.

Treatment is determined for each patient on an individual basis and may include:

  • Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): The radiologists at Van Elslander Cancer Center are able to perform an advanced intensity-modulated radiation therapy. In this radiation therapy, the high-dose of radiation is tailored to the tumor so it causes less damage to surrounding areas. The procedure is uses computer-controlled X-ray accelerators to guide the dosage to the tumors.
  • Cytoreductive Surgery: The surgeon removes as much of the visible cancer as possible from the peritoneum. This specialized surgery is often used in combination with HIPEC.
  • Hyperthermic Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC): A patient receives a cycle of warmed chemotherapy drugs. These drugs are circulated throughout the abdomen to any cancer cells that may be left over after cytoreductive surgery.

Clinical Trials and Research at Van Elslander Cancer Center

While Van Elslander Cancer Center focuses more on patient care and treatment than research, the medical teams there still match their patients with appropriate clinical trials. These trials, which test how safe and effective new drug treatments, radiation technologies (like IMRT) and surgeries are, are incredibly important for patients with mesothelioma.

This is why some patients at Van Elslander Cancer Center are currently participating in a phase 2 study to determine if using pemetrexed disodium (Alimta) stops the growth of tumors by blocking the enzymes tumors need to grow, while studying the toxicity of this regimen.
