Dr. Richard Berri is known as the best peritoneal mesothelioma doctor in Michigan and is celebrated for performing the highest number of HIPEC surgeries by a single surgeon.
About Dr. Berri
Dr. Berri is the currently the director of Surgical Oncology and Peritoneal Surface Malignancy Program at the Van Elslander Center, Michigan. The center is on the campus of St. John Hospital and Medical Centre, which is dedicated to providing patients with the best quality care.
Mesothelioma Specialist Update
Unusually for doctors specializing in mesothelioma, Dr. Berri is relatively new to the topic of study. Since being exposed to his first mesothelioma patient in 2008, he has extensively studied the disease and is now known as one of the top peritoneal mesothelioma doctors in the U.S.
Through his research into mesothelioma treatments, Dr. Berri has become very interested in the HIPEC (heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy) procedure used to remove tumors in the lining of the abdomen. Working from the Van Elslander Cancer Centre in 2011, he established the first cytoreduction surgery with HIPEC program in Michigan state.
Dr. Berri’s approach is always to find the best treatment for his patients because every case of peritoneal mesothelioma is different. While the HIPEC with cytoreduction surgery is the best option for survival, the surgeon can never know the true extent of the tumors until they open the abdominal cavity. Dr. Berri firmly believes in the best quality care for the patient before, during and after the surgery for the optimum results.

Dr. Berri’s team also run the Jerome F. Williams Gastric Cancer program for patients with other gastrointestinal cancers. His primary focus is on improving the length and quality of life for his patients.
Dr. Berri’s Current Focus
Much of Dr. Berri’s training came from his fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Centre. Since 2010 he has taken this knowledge and used it to operate on almost 200 patients.
As the Chief of Surgical Oncology and Director of Peritoneal Malignancies Program at St John Hospital and Medical Centre, Dr, Berri has built one of the finest nationally recognized HIPEC programs in the US. He is currently continuing his mission to improve mortality rates in his patients and, eventually, find a way to lengthen the overall lifespan of patients with peritoneal mesothelioma.
As an experienced surgeon, Dr. Berri’s HIPEC procedures have morbidity and mortality rates below the national average.
Aside from performing surgery and putting together comprehensive patient plans, Dr. Berri is also very passionate about research and clinical trials. He has been recognized throughout his career for his acute attention to detail, which is certainly a skill that comes in handy during the cytoreduction and HIPEC procedure. Aftercare and patient satisfaction is also something that resonates deeply with Dr. Berri. He is known for always putting his patients’ needs first.
Dr. Berri’s Healing Philosophy
Dr. Berri’s core values are centered around caring for the patient. Before the operation takes place, the patient receives a fully tailored plan, including information about recovery. The patient usually spends up to a week in the hospital and is closely monitored before they are allowed to go home.
Mesothelioma Specialist Care Philosophy
All of Dr. Berri’s patients gain access to a group of experts with each consultation. The team evaluates the patient’s health and mesothelioma stage. Working in what’s called a multidisciplinary clinic, Dr. Berri believes it’s the best option for patients as they receive an individualized plan of care. Patients and their families are also provided lots of information on their unique diagnosis.
Due to the extent of the surgery, most patients will feel extremely fatigued. Dr. Berri firmly believes that rest is the best remedy during this time.
