About Fayetteville VA Medical Center

Fayetteville VA Medical Center (VAMC) is part of the VA Fayetteville Coastal Healthcare System. The facility opened in November 2015, combining two older VA medical centers in Fayetteville since World War II.

At one time, nearby bases like Fort Bragg, Pope Air Force Base, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base housed nearly 300,000 military personnel, meaning many service members call North Carolina home. The Fayetteville VA Medical Center NC catchment area has a high veteran population.

Primary, specialty, and long-term care needs are the core focus of Fayetteville VA Medical Center. Its mission statement reflects President Abraham Lincoln’s commitment to veterans.

“VA Fayetteville Coastal Healthcare System’s mission is to offer options to timely, quality services for Veterans through care and respect for one’s physical, psychological, and spiritual health.”

U.S. Military Veterans and Mesothelioma

The only known cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, which was widely used throughout all military branches for decades. Before the dangers of asbestos exposure were known, it was relied upon heavily for its heat resistance, fireproofing, and insulating properties.

Many people were exposed to asbestos. However, studies show that the risk of developing asbestos-related cancers is significantly higher with repeated exposure, especially over a long period of time. Sadly, this is the case for many military veterans, which puts them at increased risk.

1 out of 3 mesothelioma patients is a U.S. military veteran.

Veterans with mesothelioma may not even know their cancer is due to military service since the disease isn’t usually detected until 10-50 years after asbestos exposure.

Fortunately, the VA is well aware of the tragic situation and offers low or no-cost medical service at top mesothelioma cancer treatment centers nationwide.

While not all veterans seek mesothelioma treatment within the VA Healthcare System, the option to do so is a major advantage for many.
